Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Have a question about your trees? Here are the most common questions we hear from homeowners in Minneapolis and the West Metro.
Winter Tree Care for Minneapolis
-
A: Absolutely. Tree removal in winter is often safer and more efficient. The frozen ground allows our heavy equipment to access the tree without tearing up your turf, and the lack of leaves allows our Arborists to see the tree's structure clearly.
-
A: We recommend trimming Oaks, Elms, and Fruit Trees during the dormant season. This is critical for preventing the spread of deadly diseases like Oak Wilt and Dutch Elm Disease, which are active during warmer months.
-
A: It can be difficult to tell at a glance when a tree is in its dormant state. However, you can easily check the health of your branches using these three methods:
The Scratch Test: Use your fingernail or a small knife to gently scratch a tiny sliver of bark off a twig. If the layer underneath is vibrant green and moist, the branch is alive. If it is brown, dry, or brittle, that section is dead.
The Snap Test: Gently bend a small branch or twig. A living branch is flexible and will bend easily without breaking. A dead branch will feel stiff and snap or crack with very little pressure.
Check the Buds: Even in the dead of winter, living branches have small, plump buds waiting for spring. If the buds are shriveled, dry, or missing entirely while other branches have them, that branch likely needs to be pruned.
Pro Tip: If you notice large dead branches high in the canopy or see deep cracks in the main trunk, it is best to have a certified arborist inspect the tree to ensure it doesn't become a safety hazard during winter storms. Schedule a certified arborist
