EAB only attacks ash trees, which have compound leaves and an opposite branch arrangement. Warning signs include thinning in the upper canopy, crown dieback, epicormic sprouting (new growth low on the trunk), and light-colored bark flecking from woodpeckers feeding on larvae underneath.

Is Emerald Ash Borer treatment actually effective?

Yes. Preventive treatment is up to 99% effective when started before a tree becomes unhealthy. Trunk injection with Emamectin Benzoate is considered the gold standard for larger trees, while soil and basal spray options can work for smaller trees when timed correctly.

When is the best time to treat ash trees for EAB in Minnesota?

Timing depends on the method. Soil applications should go down mid-April through mid-May. Basal trunk sprays work best mid-May through mid-June. Trunk injections are the most flexible and can be done any time the tree has a full canopy, typically May through late August.

Is my property in the Emerald Ash Borer risk zone?

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture recommends treatment for any ash tree within 15 miles of a confirmed EAB case. Given how widespread EAB now is across the Twin Cities, most ash trees in the West Metro fall within an active risk zone.
