Spring Tree Care & Post-Winter Health Inspections

Prepare Your Landscape for the Minnesota Growing Season

Minnesota winters are tough on trees. From heavy snow loads to ice storms and fluctuating temperatures, your landscape goes through a lot of stress between November and March. Spring is the critical window to assess that damage and prepare your trees for the heat of summer.

At Shadywood Tree Experts, our Spring Start-Up Service focuses on safety, sanitation, and pest prevention. Our ISA Certified Arborists identify issues early—before the leaves fully emerge—to ensure your trees thrive all season long.

Your Spring Tree Care Checklist:

  • Winter Damage Assessment: We inspect for cracked limbs, hanging branches (widowmakers), and structural splits caused by heavy snow or ice.

  • Sanitation Pruning: While major trimming is best done in winter, spring is the perfect time to remove deadwood and broken branches to improve safety and aesthetics.

  • Insect & Disease Protection: Spring is when pests like Emerald Ash Borer and fungal spores become active. Early treatment is often the key to saving a tree.

  • Growth Preparation: We check for girdling roots and advise on mulching to retain moisture before the summer heat arrives.

  • Holiday Light Removal: If you haven't taken them down, we remind clients to remove lights immediately. Wires left on growing trees can strangle limbs and cause permanent damage.
