Top 5 native trees for fall planting

Choosing the right tree to plant in your yard can be a complicated matter, but it doesn’t have to be. Some common concerns people have are the likelihood that a young tree will become diseased or if destructive insects will harm it. Choosing a tree species that thrives in our area is a good step to reduce the risk of diseases and pests that can damage or even kill trees.

Here are, in no particular order, the top five trees I recommend for residents to plant in the Twin Cities area.

1. Sugar Maple - A beautiful shade tree that will reward you with a beautiful fall display.

2. Swamp White Oak - A stately oak tree with striking bi-color leaves (dark green on top and light green on the underside).

3. Eastern Red Cedar - A wonderful evergreen tree. Birds such as cedar waxwings, robins, and many others will be attracted to your tree.

4. Hackberry - This tree has cork-like ridges on its bark, creating visual interest all year round. It is a truly stately shade tree.

5. Eastern White Pine - A giant of a tree. With its soft needles and large size, this tree provides an excellent habitat for eagles, ospreys, and a wide variety of smaller birds.

Fall is a great time to plant new trees and to have a certified arborist inspect all the trees on your property.
