Stump Grinding
Our stump removal program operates independently from our tree and landscape crews. After the tree is cut down, we need to notify "Gopher State One" so that any underground wires or cables are located and marked. They will then give us an "all clear" date, after which we can come out to grind your stump. Gopher State does not contact anyone who would identify underground sprinklers, invisible fencing, gas lines to your outdoor grill, etc. You as the homeowner will need to make us aware of anything like this before we grind. It is illegal to grind a stump without a ticket number from Gopher State.
Stumps are removed by the use of a stump grinding machine. A circular blade moves back and forth across the surface of the stump and exposed roots, producing mulch, which is not a wood chip, but a lightweight shredded wood, mixed with dirt. The stump is not "pulled out" of the ground.
Our stump grinder is not a large piece of equipment, it can easily fit through most fence gates. Our mini stump grinder is self-propelled and is about the size of a very large riding lawnmower. Typically, the stump is ground to a depth of about 6 - 8" deep, unless utility lines are present underground, which restricts the grinding to only 2 - 3" deep.
There will be a pile of mulch that will stack near the hole. This mulch can be used to spread around other trees, shrubs and flowers to help maintain moisture. However, if you decide to have us haul this mulch away, there will be an additional charge, usually about three quarters again as much as the price for grinding. Any yard repair, if necessary, is the homeowner's responsibility.
There is a minimum charge of $80.00 + tax per job. (This does not mean per stump, but rather per location.)
Please note that if the stump to be ground is in rocks or stones they must be moved away from the stump, at least 2 feet around, or an additional charge will be applied.
Also, if a mound of dirt surrounds the stump, the cost will be impacted for the hole to be ground down to the point where the yard will be level in the end. The diameter of the hole around the stump should be measured from level ground from one side to the other.
