The need for Plant Health Care is becoming more important with each year. New invasive insects and fungal diseases inadvertently brought over from Europe and Asia are threatening our trees, lakes and waterways. To date, these invasive pests have killed millions of valuable trees in the United States.
One such invasive pest, chestnut blight, has killed more than a 3 billion American chestnut trees in the eastern United States since1900. Once the most numerous and a primary source of lumber, the American chestnut, is now a minor understory tree and is of littlecommercial significance.
Another invasive disease is Dutch elm disease. American elms once lined almost every street in the Midwest and Eastern United States. Dutch elm disease has killed the majority of these trees and has forced cities to replant with other tree varieties, with most common replacement tree being green ash.
Now, our ash trees are being threatened by a new insect from mainland China. Emerald ash borer (EAB) is confirmed in St. Paul and is expected to spread and attack all our ash trees. Since being discovered in Michigan in 2002, EAB has either killed or forced the removal of millions of ash trees in the Midwest. All indications are that it will continue to spread, attacking and killing all native ash trees, numbering over 900 million in Minnesota.
It is important to know that preventative treatments are available and highly effective for the emerald ash borer and Dutch elm disease, as well as for many other problems that affect our valued trees and shrubs. From preventative treatments, removal of dead and dying trees, to replanting, Shadywood Tree Experts are in a unique position to be able to provide all possible options for any of your tree care needs.
